This rescue is due entirely to our fantastic donors -- many who stepped up and donated to get this dog to the United States, and many who reached out to actually offer her a home.
Meena’s story:
In early April we here at the SAC Fund received an e-mail from Pen mentioning a dog he had just rescued.
“On another note we have a dog called Momma dog (photo attached) that we rescued from a US base as a favour (hoping that we will get some free flights in return). However, we need to find Momma dog a home (her pups are going to be adopted by Afghans). Would the SAC fund … be able to find her a home?
I met her during my recent trip out on the base in the no man’s land where she was hiding. Super friendly dog. Got a stupid grin which caused her to be called ‘Smiley’ but Smiley is a religious Afghan term so we renamed her Momma dog. You can see the hole in the ground where she was living.”
These pictures accompanied his e-mail:
Below are pictures of Momma Dog and her puppies soon after they arrived at the Nowzad shelter:
We immediately posted an appeal and you, our fantastic donors, responded in a big way.

Five wonderful, generous families offered to give a home to Momma Dog. We dedicated May donations toward bringing her out of Afghanistan and well before the end of the month, Momma’s rescue was funded.
At the end of August she left Afghanistan and made her long journey to the United States.
The family that adopted Momma Dog, now renamed Meena, live in New York City. Meena has one dog “brother” – Xeno the dachshund, and three cat “sisters and brothers” -- Jaguar, Spice, and Mezza.

Far from that hole in the ground where she tried to keep herself and her pups safe, Meena now enjoys her own private yard, lots of walks, and lots of love.
As you know, the comfort of these animals in Afghanistan can mean so much to our service men and women who are far from home and often living in extremely hostile environments.
To be able to save an animal under these circumstances can be a huge morale boost. And bring a lot of comfort – something often in short supply.
Thank you so much to all our fantastic supporters who responded to soldiers’ pleas to save this dog and give her a wonderful life!

You’ve definitely created another happy ending!
